Science: Rocks

This week we are focusing on learning about rocks during Science. We have set up special Rock Stations that students get to participate in each day and then they rotate. By the end of the week, they will have completed all 5 stations.

Here is a glimpse of the Rock Stations:
1.  Sorting -  Students will sort a selection of rocks according to color, shape, size, and texture.  Students may use hand lenses to explore.  They can draw a picture about the ways they sorted the rocks in their Rock Journal.

2.  Color and Texture - Students will use hand lenses and explore the color and texture of their chosen rock.  Complete corresponding pages in their Rock Journal.

3.  Size - Students will compare their rocks. They will differentiate between smaller than and bigger than various objects.  Complete corresponding pages in Rock Journal.

4.  Heavier/Lighter - Students will use balance scales to determine what is heavier than and lighter than their chosen rock.  Complete corresponding pages in Rock Journal.

5.  Sink/Float - Students will make a prediction first and then drop their rocks in the water to see what happens.  They will record what happens in their Rock Journal and then use hand lenses to see observe changes to their rocks when they are wet.

Thank you to all of the families for bringing in rocks and soil (dirt)! We will be learning about Soil and Minerals next week.
