Math: 3D Solid Figure Attributes

In Math, we have been discussing 3D solid figures and their attributes. We are really focusing on the new vocabulary: vertex/vertices, edges, faces, and base. I pulled out the wooden blocks and had students point to and count the number of vertices were on a cube, or to count the number of faces that were on a rectangular prism.

Afterwards, I allowed them to use this knowledge to build towers. They found that they had to look at the size of the face on each block to see which would be the best for the base. They really enjoyed this hands-on learning activity.

Afterwards they were allowed to work with a partner to see who could build the tallest tower for a little competition. Each set of partners could choose any 10 blocks. Those who chose small blacks found that they could not build a tower that was as high as partners who chose longer blocks.
Here is a picture of the tower that me and my partner built.
